Sound Works

In my soundwork I work in two different ways : The documentary , and the theatrical in a temperamental way .

 

The documentary form, method, theme in “Where the Railroad Leaves the Sea”:

I visualize the official rooms and situations with people in their environment . With the focus on the musical undertones that embody the natural environment sounds , I mix it together ,so that a new story with its dramaturgy and direction will take place . One example of this you can hear in the soundwork ” Where the Railroad Leaves the sea ” where I followed emigrants on their way to Jerusalem from Moscow ,where you can hear excerpts from their singing ,places ,stations ,sound of the train mixed with Cesar Francs ” Symphonic variations ” . The recorded sounds was taken place during my stay in Moscow where I studied at the Russian Institute of Cinematography in Moscow in a time recently after the collaps of the Soviet -union .In this time a lot of Russian people started to emmigrant to Israel .In the soundwork there are also excerpts of a catolic prosession during easter -celebration i Semana Santa ,this to visualize  the travel ,but also the history of the incvisition in Spain.

The title ” Where the Railroad Leaves the Sea ” is based on the painter Kitajs painting with the same title . The painting portrays a person sitting on a train, a melancholic self portrait . It is personal , and at the same time it portrays a life of exile ,refugees situations ,in a both historical and temporary situation worldwide  .The soundwork was commissioned by the Astrup Fearnley museum and was played during Kitajs exchibition that took place in 1998 . The soundwork was also showed in the exhibition ” Where the Railroad Leaves the Sea ” in the Stenersenmuseum in 2007 , where I showed a retrospectiv exchibition with Video ,Sound ,and Photography .

 

The Theatrical way, method and theme in ” Pictures of the Matter ” :

The other method is about the temperament behind the language . The temperament in the voice express something different , and often the message is totally opposite of the words beeing told .

I portray different persons with diverse nationalitys that speaks about a theme with an informative ,official content . The soundwork take its root in the human voice and contains short pieces of text beeing red simultaniously with the music . With different strategies the text is being actualized by showing the text s limitations .

For example in the piece ” Grafiska Tekniker ” ( Grafical thecniques ) , the voice reveals a very dry descriptions about grafical tecniques  . Here we can hear in the voice some nuances  ,small differences that shows another story behind . With cracks coming through we can take part in the differences and similarities between text and life  . The words that are trying to hide the temperament , are revealed and betrayed by the tone and rythm . Pictures of the matter was a place- spesific sound- installation that was taken place 1995  in the old Grønland Prison in the same room where persons where iterrogated by the Gestapo during the second world -war . The exhibition was curated by Ingrid Book and Carina Heden .
